Everything About Valentine’s Day in Paris

The Third century was full of sacrifices and hardships, and men were deserting in the army. That’s the reason, young men were not choosing the military career. Hence, Emperor Claude II tried to outlaw marriage to eliminate the distractions. This decision was not accepted by a priest called Valentine, who continued doing marriage services. Due to this, he was jailed, and during his punishment tenure, he became friends with the blind daughter of one of his guards.

On 14th February 270 AD, Valentine was sentenced to death and it is widely believed that his last wish was the gift of sight he gave to the blind girl. For his love, considerate nature, and self-sacrifice, Pope Gelase I declared Valentine a saint in order to make Valentine’s Day a popular Christian tradition. So, if you want to indulge yourself and your loved one in this romantic ambiance, then make sure to spend your Valentine’s Day in Paris 2025.

Valentine’s Day in Paris 2025

Les Amoureux: In France, Valentine’s Day is for those who are “madly in love”. Like the US or the UK, the traditions in France are a bit different, and usually, kids are unlikely to exchange gifts to celebrate this day. Single roses are generally gifts instead of cards.

La Saint Valentin: Although, Saint-Valentine’s origins are generally uncertain and filled with mystery. The celebration of 14th February came much later, during the 13th century, which commemorated the death of the Roman Priest, Valentine, which is not very romantic …..but became a popular Christian tradition. The love side of this celebration evolved in the Middle Ages when the tradition of reciting love poems became popular.

Along with time, romantic notes became famous, when the Duke of Orleans wrote a love note for his wife when he was imprisoned. Then with the advancement of technology and printing, Valentine’s Day cards became popular in European countries.

Charles d’Orleans and The Most Famous VALENTINE’S POEM

Valentine’s Day in Paris 2025 is not just about the romantic gifts and celebrations, it’s also about the rich history that enhances its importance. When it comes to Valentin’s poem, Charles d’Orleans is always mentioned. Do you know who was he?

Charles d’Orleans belongs to the French royal family, and he was the grandson of King Charles V of France (r. 1364–1380) and nephew of King Charles VI (r. 1380-1422). After the assassination of his father, he became Duke of Orleans at the age of 14. In 1415, he fought at the Battle of Agincourt when France was defeated by England. Due to this, the 21-year-old was captured and brought to England, where he remained as a prisoner for the next 25 years. He was released in 1440 and died in 1465 in France.

Despite going through such trauma, he was a great writer of wistful and romantic poetry. During his entire life, he wrote around 500 poems in Middle French and Middle English.

Charles is known for writing the first Valentine’s card, for his wife. He wrote this card in the form of a poem in 1415 at age 21 when he was in captivity in the Tower of London. In his poems, Charles mentioned the age difference he and his wife had, as his wife was just 11 years old when he married her at age 16. And unfortunately, Charles never saw his wife again after being held in captivity.

Apart from celebrating the romantic weekend, Valentine’s Day 2025 is also about remembering these writers who gave a different charm to this day.
